Today is less stressful at work than the past few days. This is a welcome relief...

Rumours started flying last week, when the moving company we use and the architect who redid this place for us were sighted, and the electrician was in installing something in a wall, now covered with a panel. Then on Tuesday there were some layoffs, which came as a shock to everyone, as management had promised they were done with that kind of cost-cutting for at least the rest of the year. We were expecting "it", whatever it was, to be announced at Wednesday's corporate-wide quarterly meeting, especially since there was word of a meeting with all the managers Tuesday evening. I thought the worst part of Wednesday was when i arrived here and the parking space next to where i park was empty as i had seen the guy who usually parks there being escorted out with a box under his arm the day before. I was wrong, it was about to get a lot more interesting.

I heard someone talking about how his group were having a separate meeting before the big meeting, so mentioned it to my supervisor. He said he had just found out our group was having one, too, in about 10 minutes. Apparently each department was having one, so they could drop the bombshell on us all at the same time. It turns out they're closing down manufacturing here and moving the operation to the facility in Minnesota over the next 6 months! They want to close up as much of this building as possible in order to save money, splitting it with a wall and hoping to sub-let parts of it. Our department is moving to the corporate headquarters building a few miles away. Oh, and for accounting purposes we have to be out by Jan. 1st. There's the slight issue of us being on shutdown for the rest of the year starting Monday, though. So the move is happening this week!

Moving crates were delivered by mid-morning and after the corporate meeting we all spent the rest of the day packing our stuff. And all the training files, and my coworker's desk because he volunteered to go on an emergency service call in Israel for a week... We finished up this morning and the movers are going to be here soon. Tomorrow we report for work at the other building and figure out where our desks are. There won't be much time for unpacking though, besides tomorrow... When we come back from the shutdown, my supervisor is heading to China for 3 weeks, the other instructor will be in India on an extended leave and i'll be back in this building teaching for 6 weeks or so. Yes, teaching will still be happening here, because this is where the lab and classrooms are, but my desk will be 3 miles away. This all makes perfect sense to management, of course...

Well at least i still have a job, and don't have to move to Minnesota for it either. I think i'll be spending the two weeks' vacation updating my résumé, though.

I don't want to work / I want to bang on these drums all day.
